BELMONT, N.C. (AP/WVOC) - The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a South Carolina man was killed and four others injured when the driver fell asleep at the wheel as they returned from a shopping trip.

The Gaston Gazette newspaper reports 19-year-old Patrick Boyd of Clover, South Carolina, died in the wreck Friday morning.

The other four in the car were hospitalized.

Troopers say Boyd fell asleep at the wheel, ran off the road and hit a sign in front of a gas station.

The five were coming back from a Black Friday shopping trip to Concord, North Carolina.
