NORTH, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - Authorities say a 6-year-old boy was struck and killed Wednesday morning while crossing the road to get to his bus stop in Orangeburg County.

The incident occurred about 7:15 a.m. near the town of North along Highway 178.

Troopers say the bus was turning around on a dirt road and did not have its lights activated when the boy, who had been waiting with his brother, crossed the road and was hit by a pickup driven by a 51-year-old woman.

The Times and Democrat newspaper identifies the victim as Zion Toland, a kindergarten student at Dover Elementary School in Orangeburg District 5.

He died at the scene.

No charges have been filed.
