Things are looking up for the University of South Carolina student paralyzed after being struck by a stray bullet in Five Points.

18-year-old Martha Childress was transferred to a spinal rehabilitation facility in Atlanta this week.

And her uncle, Jim Carpenter, e-mailed the news media that his niece is learning to maneuver a wheelchair.

He says she was also able to go down to the cafeteria for a meal for the first time and she enjoyed something we take for granted – her first shower since the shooting.

Carpenter says doctors have removed a chest tube used for drainage, and her wounds are continuing to heal.

But he says by the end of the day, his niece is exhausted and ready for a good night's sleep.
