A Midlands policeman has been arrested after a domestic dispute.

Richland County Sheriff's deputies responded to an assault call just before 1 a.m. Saturday in the 800 block of Sparkleberry Lane in northeast Columbia.

Sheriff Leon Lott says 36-year-old Tobin Barton and his live-in girlfriend were involved in an argument, and that Barton assaulted her by grabbing her around the throat.

Lott says during the investigation, it was discovered that Barton is a police officer with the City of Columbia.

He was arrested on charges of criminal domestic violence, and has been suspended without pay.

Barton was released on $5,242 bond, but is not allowed to have direct contact with the victim and must have a uniformed escort when he goes to his residence to get his personal belongings.

He also was ordered to go through a mutual third party to discuss child care.
