The state Department of Revenue is warning taxpayers of a possible phone scam.
DOR officials say they've received reports of people getting phone calls from the “South Carolina Tax Commission” wanting to confirm the taxpayer's Social Security number.
The calls have been coming from a phone number with an area code of 512.
But state revenue officials say they haven't been making them, and all calls from DOR would be using a South Carolina area code.
Officials say if a caller contacts you claiming to be from the South Carolina Tax Commission and using an out-of-state area code, you should not give out any personal information.
And you should always be cautious when getting a call asking to verify your Social Security or bank account numbers, which can quickly lead to identity theft in the wrong hands.
