COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - The Highway Patrol says the driver who struck and killed a man found along a Columbia road has contacted law enforcement.
Troopers say the driver called after seeing reports about the incident and mentioned that he also called the Richland County Sheriff's Department on Monday, telling deputies he thought he hit something.
The driver's name has not been released and the incident remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says the victim appears to be a 33-year-old homeless man.
The coroner has not released the victim's name because relatives must be notified first.
Investigators say his body was found near a hotel by Farrow Road near I-77 about 8 a.m. Monday.
