Eight people have now been arrested in connection with a bank fraud operation in the Midlands.

The Richland County Sheriff's Department says the suspects are members of the 'Felony Lane Gang” – so named because they often conduct their scam in the outer lanes of bank drive-thrus where they may get less scrutiny and can quickly get away.

The gang consists of several men and women who have traveled through the U.S. over the past decade, breaking into vehicles, stealing checkbooks and various ID, then attempting to fraudulently cash checks at banks.

Sheriff Leon Lott says investigators believe the gang was generating over $12,000 a day cashing stolen checks after the first known cases in the Midlands occurred in the Lexington area last year.

The sheriff says this shows the importance of not leaving checkbooks or personal ID in vehicles.
