COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A former staff member with South Carolina's unemployment agency says the department's director made up allegations that the staffer improperly downloaded personal information to force her out.

Kerry Paul has sued Department of Employment and Workforce Director Cheryl Stanton.

Paul was fired from her post as human resources director at DEW after agency officials say she downloaded personal data of thousands of current and former employees and their beneficiaries onto a personal flash drive.

Paul says such work was part of her job and that she never acted with nefarious intent.

She says Stanton wanted her gone from the agency because other employees looked up to Paul.

She says Stanton asked her to leave last year.

Agency officials declined to comment.
