A former Saluda Middle School teacher accused of molesting Midlands boys has been sentenced to 13 months including time served and no probation.

55-year-old Thomas Taylor entered an an Alford plea to one count of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature.

In such a plea, the defendant does not confess guilt but does admit prosecutors likely would have enough evidence for a conviction if the case went to trial.

Taylor, a former 7th grade English teacher, had worked in the Saluda County school system about 30 years when he was arrested in 2010 on charges ranging from second-degree criminal sexual conduct to sexual exploitation of a minor.

His sentencing also includes an order to have no unsupervised contact with a minor outside his family for the remainder of his life, although Taylor is not required to register as a sex offender.
