The body of a missing elderly Columbia man has been found in Clarendon County.

84-year-old Jerry Helms left home Saturday morning to do some errands.

A worker at Columbia Place Mall reports seeing him about 11 a.m., but then he disappeared – until a report Tuesday of a disabled vehicle in Clarendon County, 60 miles away from where Helms lived in Richland County.

The van apparently ran out of gas along Governor Richardson Road, and law enforcement officers found Helms' body about 300 yards away after searching a wooded area.

Foul play is not suspected.

Helms was suffering from Alzheimer's, dementia and other ailments.

Family members say he had talked about going to North Carolina to visit friends after his wife of 58 years passed away November 14th.

She had been his primary caregiver.
