An alert sheriff's deputy on patrol and his police dog nabbed a suspect said to be operating a mobile meth lab in Richland County.

On Thursday, Sheriff Leon Lott says the deputy observed a driver speeding in the 1200 block of Kelly Mill Road in Blythewood.

When the officer initiated a traffic stop, his K-9 partner detected the odor of an illegal substance in the vehicle.

The sheriff says further investigation revealed marijuana and a gun inside and a mobile meth lab in the trunk.

47-year-old Samuel Guilard was charged with possession of marijuana, being a felon in possession of a firearm and manufacturing meth.
