Victims of crime in South Carolina now have several new ways to get information about inmates.
Department of Corrections director Bryan Stirling told The Associated Press Tuesday that the Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system has added text messaging and a mobile application to put information at victims' fingertips.
The Corrections Department manages the system, which tracks inmates currently incarcerated or under supervision by the Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Crime victims can sign up online for email notifications when an inmate is moved or released.
Now, a mobile application for smartphones and tablets will offer people a way to sign up for text alerts. Gov. Nikki Haley says the new system gives people more tools and support to protect themselves.
