A suspected drug dealer was shot in Richland County when deputies say he tried to run over an officer with his car.

It happened Tuesday in the St. Andrews area near Marley and Broad River roads.

Sheriff Leon Lott says 21-year-old Ty-meek Payne had been under surveillance because he was suspected of selling drugs to students in school.

Lott says officers believed Payne had drugs in his car and tried to stop him for questioning but he drove off, reportedly throwing baggies of marijuana out of his car as he fled.

At one point when deputies caught up with him, the sheriff says Payne tried to run over one of the officers.

A deputy fired several shots at the vehicle, striking Payne in the arm, and he was later apprehended on Briargate Circle and taken to a hospital.

Lott says the officer was justified in the shooting because of the threat from the suspect, who faces charges of attempted murder and possession of marijuana.
