A man carrying a South Carolina flag was doing yard work around some of the national monuments in Washington, D.C., this week.

He's been identified as Chris Cox, a Mount Pleasant native who is living in Alexandria, Virginia.

Cox told the news media he was doing the work of Park Service rangers who have been furloughed.

He mowed grass, cleaned up tree limbs and leaves, and emptied trash cans at places like the Lincoln Memorial.

Calling his effort the “Memorial Militia,” Cox said he was not politically motivated, but just wanted the monuments to look well-maintained for this weekend's Million Vet March.

The Park Service, concerned about liability issues, told Cox he could not continue the maintenance work.
