COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP/WVOC) - South Carolina's unemployment rate for September was the state's best in five years.

And ditto for October's rate.

The Department of Employment and Workforce says the September jobless rate of 7.9% went down even further to 7.5% for October – the lowest since September 2008, when it was 7.3%.

And last month's 7.5% is also the closest South Carolina's jobless rate has come in 11 years to the national rate, which was 7.3% for October.

The state's largest employment gains in October came in the manufacturing, construction and education and health services sectors, with a combined growth of 6,200 jobs.
