SC Unemployment Rate Drops Again

COLUMBIA, S.C.  (AP/WVOC) - South Carolina's unemployment rate dropped another two-tenths of a percent in April, down 5.3%.

That's lower than the national rate of 6.3% and is the lowest level in 13 years.

The state Department of Employment and Workforce reports the number of people working in the state in April reached an all-time high with about 2,050,000 employed.

It was the ninth straight month that employment had increased in South Carolina.

The latest improvement was led by gains in manufacturing, transportation and utilities, government and tourism.

By county, Marion County had the highest or worst unemployment rate at 9.5% for April, while Saluda County's rate of 3.9% was the lowest or best.
