SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C.  (AP/WVOC) - A captain from Shaw Air Force Base who touched off a five-week search across the Southeast has pled guilty to desertion.

The Item newspaper reports that Robbie Williams told his court martial he knew he was doing wrong when he decided in December not to continue his job at Shaw organizing communications between airmen overseas and the base command.

But Williams told a judge he suffered from anxiety, depression and alcoholism at the time and he said if he had not been arrested weeks later in Alabama, he would not have returned.

Williams was sentenced to four months in prison and will be dismissed from the Air Force once his time is served.
