An Orangeburg County Sheriff's deputy conducted a traffic stop when he spotted a truck matching the description of a vehicle sought in connection with a series of burglaries and thefts.

The officer says while he was questioning the driver, he smelled marijuana and asked the driver to step out of the vehicle.

When he refused, the deputy reached inside to open the door but he says the driver took off, dragging the officer.

The deputy got loose and fired shots at the truck, then pursued the vehicle.

The driver was involved in an accident but managed to get away until he was later arrested in Dorchester County.

Daniel Braxton is charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature and failure to stop for blue lights.

The incident is being investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division.
