A Richland County sheriff's deputy was shot at through a door when he went to check out a disturbance early Sunday morning.

The Sheriff's Department says Deputy Douglas Rooks was conducting a property check at the Shandon Crossing Apartments just after midnight when a resident reported a noisy argument in one of the buildings.

When Rooks knocked on the door, shots were fired through it from the inside.

As back-up officers arrived, they say a disoriented man came out of the apartment.  22-year-old Jacob Mabry has been charged with attempted murder.

A woman at the residence, 22-year-old Regina Loudagin, has been charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.

The deputy who knocked on the door, Rooks, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The State newspaper reports a growing trend of shootings involving officers, with more suspects pulling a gun on police or deputies responding to domestic quarrels, drug deals and armed robberies.

The newspaper says there were nine such shootings in Richland County last year, compared with a single instance in 2009.

Statewide, statistics show a 36% increase from five years ago.
