A teenager has been arrested after authorities say he was caught with illegal drugs and tear gas at Chapin High School.

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department says a deputy on duty as a school resource officer spotted 17-year-old Coleman Newman of Irmo buy a drink in the school cafeteria Thursday, then step outside and light a cigarette in the parking lot.

Newman is not a student there and had signed in as a visitor.

Using tobacco products on school grounds is a violation of school policy, so the deputy detained Newman.

The deputy says she detected a strong odor of marijuana, so the teen and his backpack were searched.

The officer says marijuana was found as well as papers used to make marijuana cigarettes;  a scale;  45 pills – $4,000 worth – of Klonopin, a drug that can be prescribed to prevent and control seizures;  $350 in cash;  cigarettes and a canister of Sabre tear gas.

An investigation continues into why Newman was at Chapin High and why he brought the drugs and other items to the school.
