McMaster Wants Citadel To Keep Flying Big Red

(Columbia, SC)  --  The governor is taking steps to keep a symbol of the state's past within South Carolina's borders.

Governor Henry McMaster last week wrote to Iowa's governor to see if she'd be willing to allow The Citadel to hang onto the flag called "Big Red."  The flag flew over Morris Island during the Civil War, but was later found to be in Iowa where a Union soldier had taken it.

The Citadel has been flying the flag under a mutual agreement with Iowa that expires in three years, but the "Post and Courier" reports McMaster now wants the arrangement made permanent.
