Animals that have come into contact with humans are confirmed to have rabies.
DHEC announced recently that a stray cat that scratched three people in Sumter County tested positive for rabies, and two foxes in Berkeley and Aiken counties each tested positive. DHEC believes seven people were exposed to those animals.
So far this year, 51 animals have tested positive for rabies across the state, which is less than half the annual average.
