McMaster: No Statewide Mask Mandate

Governor Henry McMaster today urged South Carolinians to wear face masks but stopped short of making it mandatory.

McMaster said the state did not have the manpower to enforce a statewide mask ordinance leading to what he called a false sense of security. He did signal his approval as it comes to local municipalities ordering face mask usage.

Several cities, including Columbia have already issued such mandates.

The Governor strongly urged young persons to wear masks and socially distance as the state has seen a rise in Covid-19 cases among younger aged groups.

No new openings were announced, nightclubs, sporting events and concert venues will remain closed under the Governor’s latest 15 day emergency order.

In addition, he has ordered DHEC to develop a plan to allow limited visitation in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

DHEC announced 1,273 newly diagnosed Covid-19 cases today, the second highest daily total the state has seen as the total number of cases rises to 30,263. One additional death brings the total number of deaths statewide to 694.
