Columbia Could Strengthen Mask Ordinance As Coronavirus Cases Go Up

(Columbia, SC) -- South Carolina's capital city could be strengthening their mask ordinance as coronavirus cases continue to rise.

Currently, people in Columbia are required to wear a mask indoors in a place of business or if they are in an area where distancing is not possible.

Mayor Steve Benjamin and the City Council are now considering stronger penalties for those caught without a mask. The next City Council meeting is November 10th, but the Mayor says the Council could present ideas within the next week.

DHEC announced 918 cases of COVID-19 yesterday. That brings the total number of coronavirus cases in the Palmetto State to 166,344 since the pandemic began.

An additional 13 deaths were reported. Those deaths span from October 21st to 28th, bringing the total confirmed deaths to 3,645.
