It's becoming an all too familiar story. A famous pastor resigns over a "moral failure".
5/6/13 Pastor David Loveless at Discovery Church in Orlando
6/17/13 Pastor Geronimo Aguilar at Richmond Outreach Center
12/30/13 Pastor Mark Connelly at Mission Community Church in AZ.
2/25/14 David Cho pastor at the worlds largest Pentecostal church.
Sadly on 12/10/13 Pastor Issac Hunter committed suicide after admitting to an affair with a staff member.
Yesterday we learned Pastor Bob Coy Founding Pastor of Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, and a popular radio pastor, had resigned last Thursday over "moral failure".
Several years ago the church I was a member of, was rocked when our founding pastor was discovered to be in an adulterous affair with the wife of our youth pastor. The lesson to be learned is screaming at us! Don't put your hope in men, but in Christ alone. The Bible says "Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem"? Isaiah 2:22.
I believe it's human nature to make gods out of something. Everyone worships something, because we were built to worship. Deuteronomy 6:13 says that and in Luke 4:8 Jesus quotes it to Satan "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'" We tend to worship gifts. So now we worship our kids, nature, sports teams, money, health, music, or perhaps a pastor. They're all gifts from God, but we're to enjoy the gift, while worshiping the giver of the gift.
Pastors, are no better than you. They have a gift from God to help teach His lessons. But they struggle with sin like the rest of us. So it could be drugs, sex, money, or something else scandalous that's taking them down, but that is the result of not loving God with all of your heart, soul, and mind. Deuteronomy 6:5 declares it and Jesus proclaims it in Luke 10:27 when asked what the greatest commandment was. And no one except Jesus did that perfectly. Hence the rest of us need to go through life humbled by the understanding that we fail Him on a regular basis and yet He loves us perfectly in spite of that.
Bob Coy and all pastors should be in our prayers. They are a "high value target" for the enemy. But when one falls, your faith will remain rock solid if you placed it in Jesus... and not your pastor.
