Obama Designates Sites In Beaufort, Others As National Monuments

President Obama is naming three new national monuments dedicated to civil rights history.

One is the first National Park Service site dedicated to the period following the Civil War. The Reconstruction-era monument includes several sites near Beaufort that became some of the first havens for emancipated slaves.

President Obama also established two monument sites in Alabama to commemorate the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 60s.
