Four Firefighters Injured Battling Blaze

Four fire fighters were treated for dehydration, responding to a 2-alarm apartment fire, Monday afternoon, at the Villager Apartments, behind the USC School of Medicine, near Garners Ferry Road.

Building "C" was most affected, damaging 16 apartments, four of which were a total loss. Fourteen apartments were occupied by families. The remaining two were vacant.

Two people needed medical treatment, and one of them, was transported by Richland County EMS. Twenty-five residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.

Some residents said smoke detectors were not working inside the apartment building, but fire officials could not tell if the devices were operational, due to the damage.
