House Votes To Strip DPS Director’s Salary

Legislators in the State House are not at all happy with the way the Department of Public Safety is being run by Leroy Smith and Tuesday, voted 76-20 to remove his salary from the budget.

Proponents cite increased road fatalities, low trooper morale, and high turnover rates as examples that he is unfit to serve. The measure essentially eliminates his position and the pay of the state's top cop.

It would be at Gov. McMaster's discretion as to whether or not Smith would be removed, he can also veto the legislators' bill, if it passes the Senate. McMaster has expressed his confidence in Smith.
