Deaths Of Four Inmates Spark Concerns About Where The Mentally Ill Are Kept

Officials are looking into the mental health services provided for prisoners after four state prison inmates were strangled by two fellow inmates last week.

The four inmates were in Intermediate Care Services, which is the last place inmates go before being hospitalized for mental illness. The killings have motivated a state panel to investigate segregating mentally ill prisoners from other criminals.

There were seven staff members and two correctional officers at the dorm at the time of the murders.
