In a tentative deal announced this morning, Virginia based Dominion Energy is buying SCANA.
The more than 14 billion dollar deal would offer refunds of $1.3 billion to SCE&G customers who have been paying for the failed V.C. Summer nuclear expansion project. The promised refunds would be about $1000 to the average ratepayer and would be paid out within 90 days of the sales completion.
The deal requires approval by a number of agencies including the SC Public Service Commission.
Dominion also promised to cut rates by about $7 per month, however the surcharge for the nuclear project would continue for the next 2 decades.
Governor Henry McMaster praised the impending deal as a “good start” but says more needs to be done including the sale of Santee Cooper the state owned utility.
