Federal Charges Against Corrections Officers Are Meant To Send A Message

(Columbia, SC)  --  A former prison official believes he knows why federal prosecutors are now going after state corrections officers.

Federal prosecutors announced last week they have charged 14 prison workers with smuggling contraband, like cell phones.  Nine of them had already been charged in state courts, but they had gotten light sentences.

Former Corrections Director Jon Ozmint recently told "The State" he believes federal prosecutors are trying to send a message that if state judges won't take smuggling seriously, then the feds will.
