Senate Subcommittee Discusses Teacher Retention

(Columbia, SC) -- South Carolina's teacher of the year winner has a warning for state lawmakers.

Elementary school teacher Jeff Maxey told a House subcommittee yesterday that unless teacher pay and benefits get better, many teachers will view South Carolina as a stepping stone to better jobs.

A senate subcommittee was also discussing education reform yesterday. District 27 State Senator Vincent Sheheen headed that meeting, and he told The State he hopes to have some recommendations next month.
