SC House Passes Sweeping K-12 Reform Bill

(Columbia, SC) -- South Carolina is taking what one lawmaker calls the right step in modernizing the education system.

That's what Darlington State Rep. Jay Lucas said yesterday after his education bill passed the House after a six-hour debate.

The bill includes higher starting salaries for teachers, the removal of four state tests and tax credits for teachers in poor, rural areas.

Lucas says the bill brings South Carolina's education system into the 21st century.
