South Carolina Deputy Directing Traffic Hit By Driver

(Lugoff, SC) -- A Kershaw County Sheriff's deputy is in the hospital after being hit by a car.

Deputy Chelsea Cockrell was directing traffic at Lugoff Elementary School when she was struck shortly after seven yesterday morning.

Authorities say she had her vehicle's blue lights on and was wearing a reflective vest.

The driver reportedly admitted to looking down at his cell phone right before the incident. Cockrell is expected to be released from the hospital sometime today.
