City of Columbia Passes Mask Ordinance

Columbia City Council has passed an ordinance requiring anyone within city limits to wear a mask effective this Friday at 6am.

The new rule means anyone within a public space or outdoors when not able to maintain social distancing wear a mask or be subject to a fine of up to $500 or spend 30 days in jail. Council says first time offenders would most likely be given a warning.

There are some exceptions including when riding in your personal vehicle, when alone inside an enclosed space or with only other immediate family members. In addition a mask will not be required when eating, drink or smoking and anyone who cannot wear one for health reasons will be exempted.

The new rule will remain in effect for 60 days.
