John C. Calhoun Statue In Charleston Being Removed

(Charleston, SC) -- The John C. Calhoun statue in Charleston's Marion Square is being removed.

After almost two hours of public comment and discussion, the Charleston City Council approved a plan to relocate the monument last night. A new location has not been determined yet, but could be a museum or academic institution.

The decision comes after protesters Monday night said the statue needed to be removed because Calhoun was pro-slavery.
