Alleged Boat Thief Gets Busted After Beaching Stolen Vessel In New York

A 32-year-old man suspected of stealing a boat was taken into custody after he ran the vessel into the ground on a beach in Suffolk County, New York. Authorities received a report that a 24-foot commercial crabbing boat had been taken from a canal in West Islip.

The owner of the boat posted about the theft on social media and received a tip that it was spotted on the Great South Bay. A lifeguard in the area noticed the boat and contacted nearby Suffolk County police officers.

The officers approached the boat and found a man and woman inside. Officers took William Deppisch into custody and charged him with fourth-degree grand larceny. The woman was not charged.

Officials did not say how Deppisch beached the vessel or if it was damaged.

The boat was towed off the beach and returned to its owner.
