South Carolina Receives $600M Settlement From Feds Over Plutonium

(Columbia, SC) -- A 600-million dollar settlement between South Carolina and the federal government is the largest single settlement in the state's history.

The settlement was announced yesterday, giving the Department of Energy until 2037 to remove nine and a half metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium from the Savannah River Site. That's where it's been located since the early 2000s, according to officials.

In exchange for the money from the Federal Judgment Fund, the state will be unable to sue the federal government over this issue until after 2037.
