UK COVID-19 Variant Now Detected In South Carolina

(Charleston, SC) -- The COVID-19 variant first detected in the United Kingdom has now been reported in South Carolina. 

The Department of Health and Environmental Control says there is an adult case of the COVID variant in the Lowcountry region. 

The patient is known to have international travel history. 

The news comes after DHEC announced two cases of a variant first found in South Africa was reported in the Palmetto State.

The Department of Health and Environmental Control announced 2,649 new cases yesterday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 396,712 since the pandemic began. 

An additional 23 confirmed COVID deaths were also reported yesterday, putting the state's death toll at 6,355.
