AG Says Columbia's State Of Emergency Mask Mandate Is Illegal

(Columbia, SC) -- The South Carolina attorney general says Columbia's state of emergency ordinance violates state law.

Mayor Steve Benjamin issued the state of emergency last week, requiring masks in elementary and middle schools as well as daycares.

A proviso in the state budget says schools that use state funds cannot require face masks.

The Attorney General is giving Benjamin until Friday to comply with state law, but the Mayor of Columbia says he will fight to keep the ordinance in place.
