Allen Benedict Court Housing Community Being Demolished

(Columbia, SC) -- Demolition is now underway at the buildings at Allen Benedict Court.

This comes after two men were found dead in their apartments at the public housing community in 2019.

High levels of carbon monoxide were then found in the buildings, displacing hundreds of residents. A city investigation following the deaths found 869 code violations, leading to an 11-thousand-dollar fine for the Housing Authority.

Demolition is expected to be completed by March of 2022, with 350 units at a newly built property expected to be ready in December of 2024.
