State Senator Hugh Leatherman Dies At Age 90

(Florence, SC) -- South Carolina's oldest state legislator is dead at age 90. The office of Senator Hugh Leatherman confirmed his passing Friday. 

Leatherman had served as President Pro Tempore of the state Senate from 2014 to 2017 and 2018 to 2019 before the position was eliminated and Leatherman was given the ceremonial title of President Pro Tempore Emeritus. 

He is the also the namesake of the country's first container terminal to open in over a decade-- the Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal, which opened along the Cooper River in North Charleston in March.
