Group Accuses Charleston Of Violating Heritage Act When Removing Marker

(Charleston, SC) - A group is accusing the city of Charleston of violating South Carolina's Heritage Act.

The American Heritage Association says the mayor's office removed a Robert E. Lee Memorial marker from the Charleston School of Math and Science.

The marker removal came after a 2020 request from the school. City officials say their legal department determined removing the marker would be permitted under the Heritage Act.

The marker is currently in safe storage.
