Transgender Sports Bill Passes South Carolina House

(Columbia, SC) - The South Carolina House is advancing a bill that would ban transgender students from playing girls or women's sports at the K through 12 or collegiate level.

Democrats tried to delay a vote on the measure by filing an estimated one-thousand amendment proposals, but the Republican Speaker threw out nearly 600 of those and Republicans limited debate on the rest to three minutes for each amendment.

After an 82 to 28 vote, the measure now heads to the South Carolina Senate.

The proposed legislation is opposed by Republican Education Superintendent Molly Spearman.
