(Columbia, SC) -- One South Carolina resident is dead after contracting West Nile virus.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control confirmed the first West Nile death of the year Monday.
There have been 11 human cases of West Nile virus in the state in 2022, nine of those from the Midlands region.
West Nile virus has also been detected in birds and mosquito samples.
