Charges Against Inmates Show Limits Of Cellphone Blocking Technology

(Bishopville, SC) -- New charges against some inmates show how hard it is to keep cellphones out of state prisons. 

Two Lee Correctional Institution inmates were charged Friday with using smuggled-in cellphones to blackmail a military veteran who wound up committing suicide last year. 

Department of Corrections Director Bryan Stirling says John Dobbins and Carl Smith could get an extra 10 years added to their sentences. 

Cell Phone communication was supposed to be blocked when new equipment was installed at the prison last year, but Stirling says wireless providers aren't cooperating with the company behind the technology.
