A memorial service will take place today in Columbia for a former state prison commissioner and lawmaker.
A family statement says Parker Evatt passed earlier this month at the age of at 88. The former department of corrections director was known for his anti-death penalty stance and his staunch efforts to help prisoners. Evatt also served as a state legislator for 13 years, championing children and criminal justice reform.
