'Out of Control' Ship Forces Ravenel Bridge Closure

(Charleston, SC)-- The U.S. Coast Guard says Wednesday's temporary closure of Charleston's Ravenel Bridge was the result of a container ship's crew losing control of the engines.

This all began shortly after noon Wednesday when, according to the Coast Guard, the pilot of the MSC Michigan reported the ship was stuck in full throttle as it left North Charleston for Savannah.

Eventually, the ship's crew was able to regain control of the engines and harbor pilots helped the nearly thousand-foot ship sail under the bridge.

Two people suffered minor injuries when their small boat was knocked aground by the ship's wake.

Just over two months ago, a container ship lost power in Baltimore and crashed into the Key Bridge, killing six construction workers.
