Local Dams Being Rebuilt

Sixteen months after floods damaged South Carolina, dams that failed from Hurricane Matthew's rains are being rebuilt.

In Richland County alone, almost 2-dozen privately-owned dams failed. Residents in Forest Acres, and homeowners on Lower Rockyford Lake received no county, state, or federal monies to help with that fix-up. They taxed themselves instead, and are seeing their financial seeds, coming to fruition, as repairs and construction has begun.

Going forward, State House Speaker Jay Lucas is spearheading a dam safety bill, requiring dam owners to inspect them annually, and submit the findings by inspectors, with other stipulations. The measure was voted down last month, by a House panel vote.
