Sumter PD Faces Lawsuit

An unarmed Sumter man was fatally shot by Sumter police last December, and now his family is suing the department.

They say 35-year old Waltki Willams did not have a weapon, yet police fired 24 shots at him, while he was on the ground. He was struck by nineteen bullets, 17 in the back.

Williams had allegedly threatened a girlfriend, and was shot after a brief struggle with police. Williams is black, the race and names of the officers involved, has not been released. Nor has the video of the incident.

SLED is investigating. Sumter police had not yet seen the lawsuit.
